Odessa State Maritime Academy is one of the leading world centres of higher marine education that since 1944 is training skilled specialists for the merchant marine, fishing fleet, enterprises and organizations of the marine transport. Since the time of foundation the leading scientists and scientific schools of the Academy made a considerable contribution into the development of the native and world marine science and technology, training of specialists for the marine branch of Ukraine and many foreign countries.

Graduates of the Academy work successfully occupying key positions in shipping companies in Ukraine, states of the CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) and in 45 foreign countries. Many foreign graduates occupy leading positions in marine education in establishments of Poland, Egypt, Canada, China, Cuba, Vietnam, etc.

Training and educational work is provided by highly qualified academic staff in 37 departments of the Academy, most of them have basic marine education and practical experience on ships, among them: 25% have degree of doctor of science and professor; 49% have candidate's degree, associate professors; 17 academicians and 9 Associate Members of Academies of Ukraine; 3 Honorary Workers of High School; 3 Honorary Workers of people's education and 3 Honorary Scientists of Ukraine.

Nowadays the Academy is an educational and scientific institution, comprising the Odessa State Maritime Academy in Odessa, the Institute of Water Transport in Kiev, faculties in the cities of Mariupol, Izmail and different training and simulator centers.

Training merchant seamen with higher education of qualified level: junior specialist, bachelor, specialist and master is carried out at the Academy both on a full-time basis and on a part-time basis (correspondence course).

2500 full-time cadets including 85 foreigners from 25 countries and more than 1500 part-time students study at the Academy.

The main difference of the Academy from other higher educational establishments of Ukraine consists in following:

  1. All full-time cadets are maintained by the state (food, clothes and accommodation are free during the residential training course, top students are paid scholarships).
  2. Academy regime is regulated by the daily routine modeling conditions of life and work on board the ship and corresponds to the statutes of the Merchant Marine (duties, watches, leaves of absence, definite regulation relations with the command staff, etc.).
  3. All graduates receive both the diploma (first degree) and Certificates of Competency permitting them to hold positions of senior officers in any shipping company of the world.
  4. The level of training specialists at the Academy meets the Requirements of the IMO Convention STCW 78/95.
  5. Practical training merchant seamen is provided in the workshops and on board the training ships and the training sailing vessel of the Academy, ship-repair plants and shipping companies.

There are 9 main faculties at the Academy: Sea Navigation Faculty, Faculty of Navigation and Operation of Specialized Ships, Marine Engineering Faculty, Electrical Engineering Faculty, Automation Faculty, Faculty of Radio Electronics, Humanitarian Faculty, Correspondence Department, Faculty of Training Foreign Citizens. They train professionals of the following professions and specializations of all educational and qualification levels:

    7.100301 - Navigation, with specializations:

    7.100301.01 - Deep-sea navigation;

    7.100301.04 - Deep-sea navigation of hydrographic ships and execution of hydrographic operation;

    7.100301.12 - Short-sea and inland navigation.

    7.100302 - Operation and maintenance of ship power plants, with specializations:

    7.100302.00 - Operation and maintenance of ship power plants (sets);

    7.100302.01 - Operation and maintenance of ship power and refrigerating plants;

    7.100302.04 - Automation of ship power plants;

    7.092201 - Electronic systems and complex sets of transport, with specializations:

    7.092201.02 - Operation of ship automatic systems;

    7.092501 - Automation of technological process management:

    7.090702 - Radio electronic instruments, systems and installations;

    7.060101 - Jurisprudence, with specializations:

    7.060101.01 - Transport Law;

    7.050201 - Management of establishment.

Leading professions are accredited by the Institute of Marine Engineers (London).

The Academy operates refresher courses for serving sea-going staff.

The Marine Academy comprises the Main in the marine branch of Ukraine center of training, full time in service training course and refresher courses for serving ship staff, providing training of seamen to the full extent in compliance with the national requirements and provisions of the International Convention STWS 78/95. The Centre is equipped with the modern marine simulators, up-to-date training facilities and computers.

The OSMA operates post-graduate courses, training specialists of the highest qualification (candidates and doctors of science).

Candidate's and doctor's degrees are awarded by the Special Council of the Academy .

The scientific activity of the Academy comprises carrying out fundamental investigations and elaborations concerning actual problems of marine education, safety of the navigation, energetics and automation of ships, systems of marine radio communication.

The course of study at the Academy is provided with modern training and laboratory facilities, marine simulators, audio-visual teaching aids, computers in compliance with the requirements of training schemes, curricula, syllabus. There are 160 training and research laboratories.

The Academy owns the campus. There are 7 Teaching blocks, 2 Assembly Halls, workshops, a garage, dining halls for academic staff, employees and cadets, a gym and a library with the fund of educational, scientific literature, belles-letters and periodicals numbering more than 0.5 million volumes.

The Academy provides necessary residential accommodation for studies and recreation, sports for cadets.

The residential quarters comprise the refectory for 1200 cadets, the swimming pool with the laboratory of frogman training and damage control, 2 gyms, a club for 400 seats, a library, a sick bay, a dispensary, a sewing and shoe workshops, a barber's shop, a manufactured goods shop, a shooting-gallery, a bath-house, a post office with Subscriber Trunk Dialing and International Subscriber Dialing.

On the shore of the Black Sea there is a sailing training centre with a lab of small tonnage vessels, where the skills of steering, rowing and navigation are trained.

The duration of the studies at specialist's level is 5.5 years, Master's - 5.5 or 7 years.

The entrance requirements for applicants, terms and cost of various levels and mode of studies are regulated by the documents of Ministry of Education of Ukraine, in the conditions of paid education - by the contracts of the Academy.

The Academy maintains constant contact with leading world Centres of marine education, International Maritime Organization, marine institutions through the exchange of scientific and educational experience.

The Agreement on Friendship and Cooperation between the Academy and the Belgian marine College has been signed. Cooperation between the Academy and the Institute of Marine Engineers (London, Great Britain) resulted in the fact that 30 scientists, instructors and cadets of OSMA acquired membership of this institute.

Close links with the World Maritime University (Malm£, Sweden) have been established.

Further development of international links is promoted by the annual shipboard training of the cadets on the ships of foreign companies.
